How to Choose a Postpartum Depression Therapist

Most women looking for a postpartum therapist are doing it on very little sleep, in a narrow window, while someone else needs holding. So the goal here is not to find the perfect clinician. It is to get one real appointment on the calendar.

Look for three letters: PMH-C

Perinatal Mental Health Certification means the clinician trained specifically in pregnancy and postpartum mental health rather than treating it as general depression. It is the single most useful filter, and our listings show it. If you want the longer explanation of credentials and who prescribes what, see which specialist treats postpartum depression.

Ask one question on the first call

Ask when the next genuinely available appointment is, not whether they are accepting patients. Those are different questions and only the first one gets you a date. It is also worth asking whether they offer a sliding scale before you assume the fee is fixed.

Take the first real opening

Waiting eight weeks for one particular name is the most common way this goes wrong. You can change therapists later, and the kind of therapy matters less than starting — both cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy have good evidence in postpartum populations, and neither is clearly better for most women.

If your city has only one therapist, or none

This is common, and it is not a dead end. Therapy licenses are issued state by state, which means a therapist anywhere in your state can usually see you by video even if they are hours away. Browse the state page rather than only your city, and treat online sessions as a full option rather than a downgrade. For many new mothers, a video appointment during a nap is the only version of therapy that realistically happens at all.

While you are waiting

If an appointment is weeks out and things get worse in the meantime, you do not have to wait it out. Call or text 988, or reach the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262, free and around the clock.
